The Basics
You don't even need a pole to begin fishing. Once you have trained Fishing you can cast and (hopefully) catch fish.
If you have decided that you want the extra style points for carrying an actual fishing pole you can buy one from any
of these vendors for a few copper.
Fishing Poles
A fishing pole is two-hand weapon. With the exception of the basic Fishing Pole, each pole provides an enhancement to the
players fishing skill. Fishing poles can have minimum player level requirements and minimum fishing skill level requirements. Here's a link to a
list of currently obtainable fishing poles.
It's worth noting again that a fishing pole only increases your fishing skill, which decreases your chance of catching junk on open water only. If you are fishing in pools, there is no reason or advantage to equip a fishing pole.
Rare Fishing Poles
Some of us just have to collect things, and anglers collect fishing poles. Here are a few that are out there:
This item can be caught while fishing in the following zones: Redridge Mountains, Northern Stranglethorn, Wetlands, Arathi Highlands and Hillsbrad Foothills. It is an extremely rare drop.
You can find these (along with a bunch of other stuff) by looting Shellfish Trap located in southwest Desolace. The drop rate isn't so bad, currently around 5-6%.
These can be found in Bag of Shiny Things from the Fishing Quest Daily in Stormwind and Orgrimmar. They can also be found in Bag of Fishing Treasures from the Fishing Quest Daily in Dalaran. It is a very rare drop.
